What you are actually buying

At project scale a modular kitchen order is dozens or hundreds of near-identical installations for apartments, staff quarters, hostels or hotel rooms: carcasses, shutters, hardware, counter tops, sinks and taps, and the provisions for appliances, all built to a small number of repeating layouts. Quotes vary on the carcass board and its moisture rating, edge banding, shutter finish, the hardware brand and its warranty, whether the counter top is included, and — most awkwardly — whether the price is per running foot, per module or per kitchen, which makes bids incomparable until the basis is fixed. The other frequent error is treating a kitchen as furniture rather than as a wet installation, so the board and the sealing fail at the sink module first.

Why modular kitchens suits collective purchasing

Modular kitchens aggregate when the units repeat. A residential project, a hostel block or staff accommodation uses three or four layouts over and over, which is a production run a manufacturer can plan around, and that is where a pooled requirement has weight. They aggregate badly when every kitchen is bespoke. The field is also crowded, running from national brands to local fabricators, so this was never in the set we plan to open first. For a group, the value is as much in holding every supplier to one enforceable board and hardware specification, with a single warranty across all units, as in the price line.

Pin down before price

  • Carcass board type and moisture rating, edge banding, and shutter finish specified as separate lines
  • Hardware make and grade for hinges, channels and lift-up fittings, with load and cycle rating
  • Counter top material, thickness, edge profile and cut-out detail, and whether sink and tap are in scope
  • Pricing basis fixed before bids: per module of a stated size, never an unqualified running-foot rate
  • Site measurement responsibility, and coordination of water, drainage, electrical and gas points

What drives ten-year cost

  • Hinges and channels fail first: replacement cost, and whether that make is still available
  • How the shutter finish stands up to heat, steam and the cleaning routine it will actually get
  • Moisture damage at the sink module, which follows from board grade and edge sealing
  • Whether future appliances will fit the module openings that were built in

How a pool for this runs

1
Aggregate the demand. Institutions register a requirement and a timeline. Nothing is committed and nothing is paid — the pool simply establishes how much demand exists in one window.
2
Standardise the specification. One technical specification is written for the pooled requirement, so every bidder quotes the same machine. Clinical and engineering specification is never traded away for price.
3
Qualify the suppliers. OEMs and authorised distributors are qualified on manufacturer authorisation, past performance, end-user certificates, financials and demonstration — before any price is opened.
4
Run the price competition. Only technically qualified bidders enter an online reverse auction, with a minimum decrement and automatic extension so the close cannot be sniped.
5
Award on ten-year cost. Lowest is judged on total cost of ownership over ten years — machine, turnkey, software, accessories, transport, insurance, taxes, warranty, maintenance contract, tubes, uptime and training.
6
Buy directly, individually. Each institution raises its own purchase order against the negotiated price and pays the OEM or dealer directly. buytogethr never takes title, never holds stock and never holds your money.
