What you are actually buying

Steel is bought as tonnage against a bar bending schedule or a fabrication drawing, not as a commodity. Reinforcement is specified grade by grade and diameter by diameter, with a corrosion class where exposure demands it; structural steel by section designation and grade, and by whether it arrives plain or cut, drilled, welded and shop-primed. Quotes differ on primary against secondary source, whether test certificates trace to each heat number, the weight tolerance and rolling margin accepted, the cutting and bending scope, and the price basis, ex-works or delivered. The usual mistake is settling a rate per tonne while leaving tolerance, certification and delivery phasing loose, then taking the whole order early and paying in storage, handling and rust.

Why steel suits collective purchasing

The founder ranks steel thirteenth of fifteen: moderate group-buy potential, very high competition, verdict not initially. The reasoning holds. Price already tracks a published national rate, established business-to-business material platforms already serve contractors well, and the gap between a large buyer's rate and a small one's is narrow beside what equipment aggregation can move. Pooling helps on the non-price terms instead: identical certification across sites, one delivery programme covering neighbouring projects, a single credit arrangement. That is real but modest. Steel belongs after the equipment pools, as a service to buyers the platform has already brought together.

Pin down before price

  • Grade for every diameter, with corrosion-resistance class where exposure requires it
  • Test certificates traceable to heat number, and who witnesses and pays for sampling
  • Weight tolerance and rolling margin accepted, and whether payment is on actual or theoretical weight
  • Cutting, bending and fabrication scope, and the schedule that governs it
  • Delivery phased to the pour or erection programme, with the price basis fixed for the term

What drives ten-year cost

  • Storage, double handling and corrosion loss wherever delivery runs ahead of the programme
  • Offcut wastage against the bar bending schedule, which the cutting plan controls more than the rate does
  • Rate exposure across a long build, and whether the group fixes the rate or only the terms

How a pool for this runs

1
Aggregate the demand. Institutions register a requirement and a timeline. Nothing is committed and nothing is paid — the pool simply establishes how much demand exists in one window.
2
Standardise the specification. One technical specification is written for the pooled requirement, so every bidder quotes the same machine. Clinical and engineering specification is never traded away for price.
3
Qualify the suppliers. OEMs and authorised distributors are qualified on manufacturer authorisation, past performance, end-user certificates, financials and demonstration — before any price is opened.
4
Run the price competition. Only technically qualified bidders enter an online reverse auction, with a minimum decrement and automatic extension so the close cannot be sniped.
5
Award on ten-year cost. Lowest is judged on total cost of ownership over ten years — machine, turnkey, software, accessories, transport, insurance, taxes, warranty, maintenance contract, tubes, uptime and training.
6
Buy directly, individually. Each institution raises its own purchase order against the negotiated price and pays the OEM or dealer directly. buytogethr never takes title, never holds stock and never holds your money.
