What you are actually buying

An electric critical care bed is a motorised frame with backrest, knee, height and tilt movements, a mechanical CPR release, side rails, castors with a central brake and a deck that may allow an X-ray cassette to be passed beneath the patient. The mattress is the item that quietly decides the comparison: one quote may carry a plain foam mattress and another a pressure-redistributing surface, and the difference is large. Motor count, deck material, rail design and the accessory package all move as well. Buyers often skip physical checks, bed width against lift and door openings, and bay spacing once rails are down and a ventilator trolley is alongside.

Why icu bed suits collective purchasing

Beds pool well because the entire specification can be written down and there is no clinical preference to negotiate, which is why hospital furniture sits in an early aggregation phase in the founding analysis. Buying is also lumpy, an institution equips a ward at commissioning and then buys almost nothing for years, and that pattern is exactly what a defined procurement window repairs by gathering several ward-sized requirements into one production run. One caution: freight and installation are a genuine share of a bed's landed cost, so a pool assembled within a region will usually convert better than one spread across the country.

Pin down before price

  • Number of powered functions, and whether Trendelenburg and reverse tilt are motorised or manual
  • Mechanical CPR release reachable from either side without tools
  • Radiolucent deck sections and cassette access, stated for the imaging you actually do at the bedside
  • Side rail type and drop action, castor diameter and central braking
  • Mattress named and priced as its own line, foam or pressure-redistributing, never left as supplied

What drives ten-year cost

  • Actuators and hand controllers, which fail long before the frame does
  • Mattress replacement and cover integrity, which is an infection control cost rather than a furniture one
  • Spare part availability and pricing once the model is superseded mid-life
  • Freight and installation, a real proportion of landed cost on a ward-sized order

How a pool for this runs

1
Aggregate the demand. Institutions register a requirement and a timeline. Nothing is committed and nothing is paid — the pool simply establishes how much demand exists in one window.
2
Standardise the specification. One technical specification is written for the pooled requirement, so every bidder quotes the same machine. Clinical and engineering specification is never traded away for price.
3
Qualify the suppliers. OEMs and authorised distributors are qualified on manufacturer authorisation, past performance, end-user certificates, financials and demonstration — before any price is opened.
4
Run the price competition. Only technically qualified bidders enter an online reverse auction, with a minimum decrement and automatic extension so the close cannot be sniped.
5
Award on ten-year cost. Lowest is judged on total cost of ownership over ten years — machine, turnkey, software, accessories, transport, insurance, taxes, warranty, maintenance contract, tubes, uptime and training.
6
Buy directly, individually. Each institution raises its own purchase order against the negotiated price and pays the OEM or dealer directly. buytogethr never takes title, never holds stock and never holds your money.
